New partnership aims to strengthen coaching and student-athlete development in Monongalia County Schools

In an effort to continue to foster a positive and enriching sports culture in its schools, the Monongalia County Board of Education has announced a partnership with the Positive Coaching Alliance.

The partnership provides comprehensive workshops, resources, and training sessions tailored for coaches, student-athletes, and parents in the Monongalia County Schools system. All fees as part of the agreement are being paid for by the West Virginia University College of Applied Human Sciences Positive Coaching/Sport Parenting fund. The funding underscores WVU’s commitment to the holistic development of young athletes in educational settings.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the WVU College of Applied Human Sciences Positive Coaching/Sport Parenting Fund and the Positive Coaching Alliance for partnering with Monongalia County Schools and our athletic programs,” said Adam Henkins, Director of Safe Schools and Athletics for Monongalia County Schools. “This collaboration offers an incredible opportunity to enhance the sports experience for both kids and coaches. By learning what makes kids perform better and enjoy sports more, we can continue to self-evaluate and strive for excellence as coaches.”

“We are happy to support this partnership between PCA and Monongalia County Schools,” said Dana Voelker, associate professor and director of the WVU School of Sport Sciences in the College of Applied Human Sciences. “We are proud to contribute to a program that reinforces the vital role that sports and coaching play in fostering character, resilience, and mental wellness in student-athletes. I believe this will be a great resource for the coaches and student-athletes in Monongalia County that will help them excel both on and off the field.”

Among the first sessions this fall for coaches is on Thursday, Aug. 15, from 8-11 a.m. at University High School, featuring a presentation titled “Developing Competitors and Mental Wellness Through Positive Coaching.”

Coaches will benefit from ongoing training and professional development opportunities provided by PCA focusing on the double-goal coaching philosophy that creates an environment where winning and character development are both sought. Student-athletes will have the opportunity to learn from national experts on various aspects of sports, including leadership, competition, and sportsmanship. Workshops will also be available for parents to help them understand their role in positively supporting athletes and coaches in competition.
