West Virginia Reading Association recognizes Morewood and literacy education alums

The West Virginia Reading Association honored one faculty member and two alumni of West Virginia University’s Literacy Education program at its most recent annual conference.

Aimee Morewood, professor and program coordinator of literacy education in the WVU School of Education and Counseling, received the Madge McDaniel Award, which recognizes educators who have made an outstanding contribution to helping students become proficient, lifelong readers.

Michelle Rose, a graduate of the literacy education program, was inducted as WVRA’s Second Vice President. Nicole Majewski, also a program graduate, was nominated for the Eddie C. Kennedy Award, which honors inspiring educators and advocates for reading literacy.

Both Rose and Majewski participated in Benedum Foundation grants as students in the program. Majewski later returned as a mentor for one of those initiatives, and both were featured in a recent alumni project funded by the Engage WVU Giving Circle. That project highlighted the literacy leadership of 15 LE alumni across the state, with their stories available on the WVU Literacy Education Facebook page.

The Engage WVU Giving Circle has also provided funding for a new series of 15 videos in 2025–26, featuring literacy leaders from LE’s collaborative project with Kanawha County Schools.
