Miller receives SHAPE America's top undergraduate honor

Noah Miller, a Physical Education and Kinesiology (PEK) major at West Virginia University, has been named a 2025 SHAPE America Major of the Year — one of the highest national honors for undergraduate students in the field.

Presented by the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE America), the Major of the Year award recognizes top-performing students in health, physical education, recreation, and dance who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, and a commitment to service. Students are nominated by a faculty advisor or professor, with only one nomination permitted per major.

“This honor means a great deal to me because it validates the time and effort I have invested in my degree, program, and teaching,” Miller said. “Being recognized by the national governing body of my field makes me feel more confident in my teaching and motivates me to continue striving for excellence."

At WVU, Miller has been a consistent presence in the PEK Leadership Council, where he has led program events and organized community service initiatives. His work reflects a focus on developing the skills and knowledge needed to be an effective physical education teacher, and his contributions within and beyond the program earned the attention of his faculty.

"Even prior to taking my course, Noah has demonstrated his passion and dedication to our field through his work on the PEK Leadership Council," said Emi Tsuda, associate professor in the School of Sport Sciences. "He is a leader and a team player who will undoubtedly make an excellent contribution to the profession."

To be eligible, students must be juniors or seniors in an HPERD-related major, maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher, hold an active SHAPE America membership, and contribute meaningfully to their school or community through at least two years of service.

Miller was formally recognized at the SHAPE America 137th National Convention & Expo, held March 17-21 in Kansas City, Missouri.
