CPASS graduates work together to impact physical education in Massachusetts school district

Two CPASS alumni have combined efforts to strengthen physical education in the Canton Public Schools District (Canton, MA). Ryan Gordy was promoted from wellness instructor at Canton high school to K-12 wellness department coordinator for Canton Public School District. The district hired CPASS grad Adam Hughes as his replacement at the high school.

Gordy and Hughes met each other through the Physical Education Teaching Education program at West Virginia University. With similar views on physical education, the two graduates are now working together in Canton on a new PE program to improve student growth throughout the school district and impact the community.

They plan to implement an adventure education model in the curriculum which places students into groups where they must work together to solve problems. “This promotes leadership and togetherness,” said Gordy.

The K-3 curriculum focuses on movement patterns, grades 4-6 focus on skill development, 7-9 combines movement and skill with the development of strategic planning while grades 10-12 specialize in fitness education and student choice for achieving lifelong wellness.

According to Gordy, adventure education allows students to feel confident in trying new things while in a supportive environment.

“We are focusing on a culture shift which would allow students to try new things and know that their team (classmates) are there to help support, encourage, and problem solve together,” Gordy explained. “This culture can spread far beyond PE classes and become an identity for a school.”

As Gordy and Hughes continue in their PE careers, the graduates credit CPASS for preparing them to succeed.

CPASS acted as a foundation for Gordy. “PETE served as the platform for me to develop my own theories regarding physical education and wellness as a whole,” said Gordy.

“Dr. Sean Bulger made the biggest impact on me during my time at CPASS. We have communicated regularly since graduation and he has served as a wonderful resource throughout my career,” Gordy added.

For Gordy, the large networking system he established at WVU has resulted in developing great ideas and long lasting friendships. He advises current students to

establish connections. “With a professional support system and a passion for what you do, impact is right around the corner,” He explained.

Gordy plans to continue developing the Canton Public School District wellness department. His ultimate goal is to develop a culture shift using wellness as the tool and create a supportive environment to emphasize social and emotional growth among students. ”I hope this will improve the community culture, allowing students to exceed their own expectations,” he concluded.
