SEP student recognized as Volunteer of the month

Wayne Sasso, senior Sport and Exercise Psychology student, was awarded the title of Volunteer of the Month after devoting time to the Mental Health of America, Monongalia County. Sasso spent two-days-a-week calling for donations, filing and helping clients create resumes and set up email accounts. Most importantly, he leant a listening ear to those who needed it.

“I like being able to sit and talk with people from different walks of life. I really enjoy their stories,” said Sasso.

While volunteering with Mental Health of America, Sasso learned that everyone needs some form of support. Many times, though, clients are uncomfortable asking for help. Nicole, the leader of the Friendship Room, has shown Sasso how to offer support to those who are unlikely to ask for comfort.

The Friendship Room offers a variety of weekly programs to assess and manage the needs of mental health consumers who use the program on a regular basis.

“Seeing how Nicole interacts with the people made me want to spend more time communicating directly with clients,” said Sasso.

Sasso adds that MHA is always looking for volunteers. “It’s a great way to give back to the community while adding to your own personal experience,” he explained.

According to Sasso, since volunteering with MHA he has grown as a person and improved his skills as a volunteer.
