Guy Hornsby, assistant professor for coaching and performance science in the College of Applied Human Sciences, has been named the Educator of the Year by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
Hornsby was one of seven recipients of the organization's 2024 Peer Awards recognizing professionals for outstanding achievements in their field. Each individual was nominated by the NSCA community and will be recognized at the national conference in Baltimore in July.
The Educator of the Year Award is presented annually to an educator who has made noteworthy contributions to both education and clinical practice within strength training and conditioning.
"This award is particularly special because the committee leans heavily on student work with the faculty member," Hornsby said. "Therefore, it is an achievement that I very much could not have attained without the dedication and hard work of so many of our coaching students that I have had the opportunity to work with over the past nine years here at WVU."
Hornsby's primary responsibilities include overseeing the strength and conditioning and applied sport science aspects within all levels of the coaching and performance science program. Additionally, he coordinates and oversees a school board-funded graduate assistantship program that provides a head strength and conditioning coach to three local area high schools. He previously served as the NSCA Director for West Virginia and is currently the NSCA Weightlifting Special Interest Groups Chair.
Hornsby has presented at the NSCA National Conference, NSCA Coaches Conference, and the NSCA Advanced Periodization Virtual Clinic. He contributed a chapter, “Exercise Technique,” to the upcoming fifth edition of the NSCA’s Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning, authored or co-authored several book chapters, and co-authored Strength and Conditioning in Sports: From Science to Practice. His research is centered around better understanding the training process for strength-power athletes and various aspects of athlete monitoring.
In addition to Dr. Hornsby’s recognition, the NSCA honored several other professionals: Tara De Leon received the Personal Trainer of the Year Award, Justin Loudon was named High School Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year, Katie R. Hirsch earned the Nutritional Research Achievement Award, Helen Binkley was awarded the Sports Medicine/Rehabilitation Specialist Award, Dimitrije Cabarkapa received the Terry J. Housh Outstanding Young Investigator Award, and Rhodri S. Lloyd was honored with the William J. Kraemer Outstanding Sport Scientist Award.
