The panelists included
Dana Voelker, CAHS associate professor;
Nikki Izzo-Brown, WVU women's soccer coach;
Meg Bulger, former WVU women’s basketball standout and current broadcaster;
and
Natasha Oakes, WVU senior associate athletics director. The event was moderated
by Lauren Boczek, a WVU alumnae and current public address announcer for the
WVU women’s basketball program.
The panelists provided their unique perspectives and experiences on Title IX, and insight on the road ahead. They discussed the positive impact of Title IX legislation from the start of their careers until now, making note of increased collegiate and professional opportunities, and expanded media exposure for women’s sports as among the largest differences. They shared their views on the ongoing challenges and obstacles that women in sport will continue to navigate over the next 50 years. Following the general discussion, the panelists fielded questions from the audience.
The panel discussion was inspired by the most recent season of Time Out hosted by Dr. Voelker. The four-episode season entitled “ Let’s Elevate Girls and Women in Sport” includes interviews with pioneering leaders who have blazed new trails for girls and women at the highest levels of the sport industry.
“This podcast is a really exciting venture for us,” Voelker said. “The series features really strong women in sports leadership positions at the highest levels of college and professional sports. Part of the purpose of it is to bring some attention to what we do here at West Virginia University helping people, women and girls in particular, to be successful in the sports industry,”
The podcast is available now on all major podcast apps including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher and Google Play.
