Dr. Ryan Flett, assistant professor, Athletic Coaching Education, was recently awarded a grant from The Association for Applied Sport Psychology. The AASP grant will provide funding for a pilot study examining the perspectives of school decision makers in Monongalia County, such as athletic directors and higher-administration, regarding the role that student-athletes can have in reducing bullying and facilitating a positive school environment. 

Flett focused on positive youth development (PYD) through sport in underserved settings during his doctorate and hopes this study will be an effective pilot for an exciting line of research. Since beginning his work in the department of Coaching and Teaching Studies, his focus has shifted from youth development in underserved settings to PYD in the school setting.

CPASS Ware Distinguished Professor, Dr. Eloise Elliott, continues to see success in promoting healthy lifestyles in West Virginia. 

Elliott was invited to participate in a webinar sponsored by the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) on Jan. 30. The webinar featured the Physical Activity Guidelines for all Americans, and Elliott had the opportunity to highlight the West Virginia Physical Activity Plan.

Michael Funkhouser was named Teacher of the Year for the state of West Virginia for 2013. Funkhouser, 1980 CPASS graduate, started his teaching career as an elementary physical education teacher. In 1984, he begin teaching English at East Hardy High School in Baker, W.Va. As the West Virginia Teacher of the Year, he will travel the country throughout 2013. “I’ve been to Phoenix, St. Louis, Huntsville, Alabama. It’s been a big year so far. It’s really the work of the school why I’m sitting here. It’s nice to give back. I honestly wish every teacher could have this opportunity, and I’m doing what I can to represent every teacher in the state,” said Funkhouser.
